Serikin

Serikin was born on 8 July 2019 at Taipei Zoo before arriving at Mandai Wildlife Reserve as part of an international breeding exchange programme.

On her first day exploring her new habitat at Rainforest Wild Adventure WEST, she emerged almost immediately to investigate the surroundings — including the gathered crowd watching her arrival.

Since then, keepers have consistently described her as calm, confident, and notably attentive to activity around her.

Although confident, Serikin generally prefers to move at her own pace. She responds readily when keepers call her name and often approaches gradually after observing the situation first. She is particularly interested in activity within neighbouring habitats and regularly spends time watching nearby animals with focused attention.

Enrichment items, especially large balls, are another favourite. Like all Malayan tigers, her pattern of stripes is entirely unique — effectively serving as her own natural “fingerprint”.

Serikin rotates between three habitats as part of her daily management routine and participates in positive reinforcement training that supports voluntary injections, annual vaccinations, and blood collection procedures from the tail.

According to her keepers, she is also notably vocal and frequently responds when staff greet her during morning checks. It is a surprisingly conversational start to the day for an apex predator weighing well over 100 kilogrammes.

The Malayan tiger is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with fewer than 150 individuals estimated to remain in the wild in Peninsular Malaysia. Poaching, habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten their survival.

We partner with Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers to support anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection, and community engagement. Serikin represents one of the world’s rarest tiger subspecies — and a powerful reminder of how urgently their forests still need protection.
