Yellow-naped Amazon

Yellow-naped amazons are among the most accomplished vocal mimics in the parrot world. Their calls vary across different regions, much like human dialects, with distinct vocal patterns emerging between forests and mangrove habitats.

Mated pairs perform complex duets unique to males and females, exchanging an extraordinary variety of calls that help strengthen social bonds and maintain communication across dense tropical landscapes.

In the wild, yellow-naped amazons may live for 20 to 30 years. Under human care, however, they can survive for well over half a century, with some individuals reaching 80 years of age.

Such longevity demands an immense commitment, which is why these intelligent parrots should not be pets despite their popularity and remarkable ability to mimic human speech.

Yellow-naped amazons form long-term monogamous pairs and often remain together for life. During the breeding season, pairs defend territories surrounding nesting sites high within tree cavities, sometimes over 30 metres above the forest floor.

While the female incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks, the male gathers food and delivers it carefully to the nest entrance without entering.

The yellow-naped amazon has suffered a devastating population decline, with numbers dropping by more than 90% over the past three generations.

Today, only around 2,500 individuals are thought to remain in the wild. Illegal trapping for the pet trade remains the greatest threat, compounded by habitat destruction and the growing pressures of climate change across Central America.

Because yellow-naped amazons return repeatedly to the same nesting trees, poachers can easily locate breeding sites year after year. Rather than capturing adult birds, they often target eggs and chicks destined for the illegal pet trade.

The consequences are catastrophic. Many young parrots die during transport, and in some areas, entire breeding populations have been lost due to relentless nest poaching.

Highly intelligent and deeply social, yellow-naped amazons are poorly suited to life in confinement. In the wild, they travel long distances, communicate constantly and live within complex social groups.

Captivity can deprive them of these essential behaviours, leading to severe stress, feather-plucking and psychological distress. Their popularity as pets has come at a tremendous cost to both individual birds and the species as a whole.
