Rwanda Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa is modelled after the forested valleys of continental Africa. On-site mature trees have been preserved during the construction of this aviary to create a densely forested home for over 80 species of amazing African birds.

Layer by Layer
In tropical forests, different bird species exist in different layers.
At Rwanda Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa, suspension bridges criss-cross at varying heights, facilitating encounters with ground birds such as guineafowls and cranes and offering mid-canopy vistas of insects and fruit eaters.
The forest experience culminates at the observation tower for an all-encompassing bird’s eye view.
Where Giants Thrive
Rwanda Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa is the largest of the eight aviaries in Bird Paradise. It is also the most forested, thanks to concerted efforts to preserve over 150 mature trees which were on the site before the construction.
Look out for the biggest tree—a weeping fig—in Mandai Wildlife West, and the critically endangered tree Marsh Ubah which is known to exist only in the forested areas of Mandai and Yio Chu Kang.
Animals
Great blue turaco
This shy bird not easily observed among the forest foliage except when small groups gather and call in chorus, sometimes for several minutes.
Red-crested turaco
The only family of birds that is entirely endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, the turacos are known for their punk ‘hairdos’. The feathers around their head do not have barbules, which gives a glossy appearance to their raised crest.
Superb starling
The superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus) is a member of the starling family of birds. It was formerly known as Spreo superbus.
