How was Pierre’s condition when he arrived?
When he arrived, he was having arrested moulting which basically means his feathers is not waterproof and unable to swim well. He was also having low appetite. What did you do to help him?
There were significant changes to his environment like temperature being lower and also had different substrates like turf mat, pebble wash and rocks for him.
We were fattening him up by giving him capelins filled with nutrients in hopes that it would help to promote his feather growth. He was also introduced to other penguins.
As a result, appetite slowly increased, started socialising, slowly adapted to the temperature and environment and Pierre eventually started moulting properly.
Any future plans for Pierre?
We have plans to bring in more northern rockhopper penguins in the future and successfully breed them to boost conservation efforts.
