The Bali mynas

The Curse of Beauty

The Curse of Beauty

The Bali myna is only found in Bali, Indonesia and nowhere else in the world.  Its snow-white plumage contrasts sharply with its blue `eye masks’.

Rare and beautiful, the Bali myna is a much-coveted songbird and an unfortunate target for unsustainable trapping that has driven the species to the brink of extinction.

All Is Not Lost

All Is Not Lost

In 2001, the population of the Bali myna plummeted to an all-time low with only six individuals left in the wild. But with our support, conservationists have been able to persist in their vision of seeing this species fly free in Bali’s skies again.

Together, we protect wildlife

Saving Bali Mynas For Over 30 years

Saving Bali Mynas For Over 30 years

Our involvement in saving the Bali myna from extinction spans over three decades, from 1989 to present. It began with us caring for the Bali myna in Jurong Bird Park to subsequently partnering Begawan Foundation and expanding our conservation impact of the species in the wild.

We support Begawan Foundation by funding the construction and maintenance of Bali myna breeding facilities, the care for the birds in the breeding centre, relocation of facilities from Siband to Payangan to centralise breeding efforts for better outcomes. Our staff provide advice on husbandry practice and veterinary care to help the Foundation build capacity.

Engaging Local Communities

Engaging Local Communities

Several village volunteers have been trained to breed Bali mynas for release. This programme operates through the Madhusuara Breeders Association Melinggih Kelod. The locals also participated in post release monitoring to evaluate the programme and protect the release birds. Nest boxes were placed in a variety of locations to provide the released birds a conducive space to raise chicks.

The Hard And Soft Approaches

The Hard And Soft Approaches

Creating awareness and connection is key to wildlife conservation. Our funding for education programmes on Bali mynas have reached out to over 2,000 students in six villages, empowering the children to help protect the species. The institution of a local law that prohibits trapping of Bali mynas and other protected wildlife certainly helps in securing their future.
